SATB a cappella
Sacred text in English (1 Corinthians 15:51-55)
Difficulty rating (1-5): 2

My friend Jonathan David asked me to write this piece for a special concert in New York City that he was preparing. The concert was centered on texts by St. Paul. I found this text from First Corinthians to be quite inspiring. The beginning contains a held tone, above which the other parts are tonally ambiguous, an attempt to render a mystery musically. This text has also been set by Vaughn Williams and his anthem has always been a favorite of mine.

Behold, I tell you a mystery;
we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,
at the last trumpet; for the trumpet shall sound,
and the dead will be raised imperishable,
and we shall be changed.
Then will come about the saying that is written,
"O Death, where is your victory?
O Death, where is your sting?
