The lyrics are from the fifteenth century Sloane Manuscript 2593, but no musical settings from that period have survived. The text has been set by a number of twentieth century composers including Peter Warlock, John Ireland, and, of course Benjamin Britten in his Ceremony of carols. Typical of the medieval mindset, everything is topsy-turvy: the apple is actually blessed, for without it Mary could not become “heavene queen”.
