Sweet was the song the Virgin sung (Lutebook lullaby)

SSAA a cappella

Examining four early sources, it is unclear which one represents the original form of the song. Some of the sources ornament the melodic line greatly, perhaps an indication that they are later versions. The alternate name, Lutebook Lullaby, stems from the song's inclusion in William Ballet's Lute Book (Library of Trinity College, Dublin) for solo voice and lute. The measures of rising and falling Josquin-like imitation and other lyrical touches make this an endearing little gem.
